Airbridge to India - Direct Airlink Between India & Trinidad & Tobago (WestIndies)

Caribbean Airlines Ltd gets clearance from Trinidad government for India flights.
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Thursday January 12, 2012 – With the Trinidad and Tobago government actively courting new trade linkages with growing economic superpower India, measures are being put in place to ensure regular airlift between the two countries.

Transport Minister Devant Maharaj announced this week that the way has been paved for Caribbean Airlines (CAL) to fly from Trinidad to India and vice versa.

He said a plan has to be formulated and logistics worked out as to acquiring new aircraft and making this initiative a reality.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and a contingent of government officials and around 100 Trinidadian business people are currently in India for a series of meetings and, last Friday, after bilateral talks with India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Persad-Bissessar and Maharaj signed an air services agreement with the Indian Government.

Following the inaugural ceremony of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas  at Birla Auditorium, Jaipur, where Persad-Bissessar was the chief guest, Maharaj explained that negotiations for the air link between Trinidad and Tobago and the sub-continent had been going on for years.

He termed the new agreement a “significant landmark” as not only would it allow CAL to fly to Delhi, bringing tourists and business people from India to the Caribbean nation, but through CAL’s route operations, it also opened up markets in Latin and South America to the East Asia.

He said these air links have an impact on the Government’s economic policy.

“These air links are being strategically made to those emerging economies that have been globally recognised as the economies that will be leading in the future, if not presently,” he said.
Maharaj said it was no coincidence that air links have recently been established with Brazil, India and Nigeria- economies which he said were strong and growing. Click here to receive free news bulletins via email from Caribbean360. (View sample)
